As the Regional Tourism Organisation (RTO) for Tairāwhiti Gisborne, led by Trust Tairāwhiti—the region’s economic development agency—our role is to champion a visitor economy that reflects the cultural depth, natural beauty, and community aspirations of our region. We aim to strengthen Tairāwhiti as a place of national significance for New Zealanders and a must-visit destination for international travellers seeking authentic and enriching cultural experiences.
Our RTO footprint includes the unique communities within the Ōpōtiki District Council boundary, contributing to a diverse and compelling regional offering. Guided by the principles of manaakitanga, kaitiakitanga, and whanaungatanga, our destination management approach is holistic—balancing tourism growth with cultural integrity, environmental stewardship, and long-term regional wellbeing.
Our strategic priorities are clear: we focus on developing high-quality, sustainable visitor experiences that reflect the stories and landscapes of Tairāwhiti; we drive targeted marketing and storytelling to attract and engage visitors; and we lead sector alignment by fostering collaboration across iwi, hapū, industry, and community. We also operate the Gisborne isite, which serves as a frontline hub for visitor information and regional storytelling.
Through this work, we ensure tourism contributes meaningfully to the region’s economic development, cultural vitality, and community resilience.
