Ōamaru Penguins is a Qualmark Gold accredited conservation experience in Ōamaru, home to the smallest penguin in the world — the little penguin, or kororā. With an ever-growing colony of around 600 birds, Ōamaru Penguins offers visitors a rare, close-up look at this native New Zealand species in its natural habitat.
By day, explore our Discovery Centre, see the penguins in specially designed nesting boxes, and wander the breeding colony. After sunset, watch as little penguins return home from a day fishing at sea during our Evening Viewing.
Since 1993, we’ve carried out ongoing research to monitor Ōamaru’s little penguin population and support the species’ wider conservation. Every bird in the colony is tracked, giving us one of the most detailed breeding records of any little penguin site in the country.
Located just 5 minutes from Ōamaru’s town centre, we’re an easy stop for visitors exploring the South Island. Adopt a penguin or visit our gift shop to support our conservation work directly.
